Block 23

I managed another block! Woo-Hoo!!

Did you all read Gaye's post about the border construction? She is giving directions to do them the traditional way but the original maker did them like this diagram. Very fascinating!! My plan is to keep them like the original. What about you all? Any thoughts on that?

  1. No, I didn't read Gaye's post on the borders. I will hunt it down. I was curious to know if anyone is going to start them prior to putting the blocks together. I want to, but it is risky. I don't know the length that MY quilt will finish at. What is everyone going to do?

  2. Sorry, I forgot to say how much I like your block, particularly how you managed the ring and the bow with your stripe.

  3. I'm going to start mine but not work them all the way to the end. That way I should be able to make some adjustments if need be.

  4. I'm going to cut my borders longer and wider and do like Lori. Not stitch to the end. I will go back and look up the border pattern. I was thinking of doing the top and bottom and then doing the sides and having the applique run off the end. But in two years, when I get to this, I might change my mind after I see what others finish ;-)

  6. Nice block, Lori! I read Sharon's post first (going down the list) but thanks to you, too, for posting about the borders. I like this idea and will be doing mine like the original. I'm still three blocks (four pretty soon) behind so won't be starting any borders for a while. I may even wait till the blocks are finished so I know how long to make them.

  7. Your block reminded me of peppermint candy. It looks so yummy. As for the borders, I think I may be doing them the way the original quilt did them.

  8. Your use of the green striped fabric in the wreath and bow are so effective...it turned out beautifully!

Since I am slow at doing my blocks and still have a number to go, I will reserve any decision on border treatment until later. I do think I might try staying with the original layout. I look at the borders as a looonnng winter project after the holidays...:o)

  9. I will not be starting my border yet. I want to see what size it ends up first. I have started the circles though! Did heaps with Perfect Circles last week at my sewing group. I think I will keep them as the original. Looks easier that way.

  10. I have done several borders like that especially when using a fabric from my stash that wasn't long enough. It works OK but not as good as mitreing your corners

  11. I quite like the idea of following the original border construction, but I think you would have to complete all the blocks first to ensure that the borders are of the correct length and width. I will continue to make the berries and prepare the leaves as I am worried that I am not going to have sufficient of the mustard yellow fabrics to meet the requirements of the border, so if needs be I can introduce more fabrics into the blocks at the same time as preparing the leaves for the border.
