Been very quiet over here at the Cherry Tree blog...wondering how all of you are doing...
Just thought I would do a quick update on my own progress or lack thereof...I ran into some issues with the machine basting on my quilt and long story short, some of my very special applique friends came out to the house and helped rebaste the entire quilt by hand last week. It is now perfectly smooth, layered beautifully and ready to resume handquilting as the nights are turning chilly and outdoor chores are winding down. This quilt was packed into a special wrapper and traveled with us all through Canada and Alaska this summer. When did I think any time would be available to work on this?
Just 2 photos to post showing everyone hard at work with the basting. One of the ladies kept us continually supplied with threaded basting needles - how nice is that?!!
Looking forward to hearing where you are at with your quilt...
Pat
Pat -- OM Goodness -- the quilt -- and the "quilting room" are beautiful! Best of luck with your hand quilting. You should be so very proud of what you've accomplished to date... and also very blessed to have such wonderful basting buddies!

Seeing it all out like that reminds me of how huge it is! Have you started quilting yet?
ReplyDeleteWow, your place is gorgeous! Is this in a frame? Is so, why aren't you quilting it like this and skip the basting? Just asking, I'm a lap quilter so I baste as well. No hoop or frame. This is an amazing piece. Mine is getting sent to Bellwether Dry Goods in MD for marking, I'm going to x hatch 3/4" throughout all the blocks, and then stitch diagonal lines through the border and outline the appliques, Yikes, it sounds daunting!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to have a room like that - big enough to spread out the quilt and still room to walk around! The room is beautiful - I especially love the fireplace. And how wonderful to have a group of friends to help you baste it. I'm sorry the machine basting didn't work out. It was a great idea.
ReplyDeleteJust following up on a couple of questions asked.
ReplyDeleteThe only quilting done is stitching next to the applique pieces in the center block - plus started doing the little scalloped border I made up to go around each block - to give a sashing effect & some kind of unity. Will also be crosshatching each block.
The huge frame was made by a long time guild member's husband. We had to move alot of furniture out of the great room to set the frame up. I could not leave it up for the next 10 years it will take to quilt this LOL! I prefer using a small hoop anyway . Feeling a bit overwhelmed when looking at the size of it all. Thanks for your kind comments.
Well, here you have a modern day quilting bee. How wonderful. What a beautiful room to work in, too. I wouldn't let the quilting get to you. Remember how we felt when we started block #1? We finished the tops, so I know you will have this hand quilted in no time. ...and that is coming from someone who has absolutely not patience for doing mine by hand, but yours and all the other gals who are going to hand quilt this quilt are going to have very spectacular quilts.
ReplyDeleteI see that you have not made the appliqued border. That makes me think that perhaps I will search for a nice border fabric, and get the whole thing together. Good plan. Your's looks wonderful. Wendy
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures - I have my blocks done and am still undecided on the borders.
ReplyDeleteLove your basting party!!
What an exquisite quilt and such a lovely room. It's wonderful that you had friends to come over and lend a hand. I don't have any quilting buddies, but I think that going back to our pioneer origins that is pretty much how it all started out, friends helping friends whether it was to quilt a quilt or to build a cabin.
ReplyDeleteWow! Fabulous quilt! And you live in a cabin too, just like me. And such a large table. I m so impressed. Wonderful, wonderful, quilt.
