Grapes or Cherries?

After the last post I was wondering what you all think about the color of the circles in block 16. I really had not thought about it because it is a ways off for me, but it is the center block which may lead me to make them red too. Although it does look like a grape vine so I like the purple too.

Just curious if you had thought about it.

  1. Well I have given it some thought. They were designated as being purple in colour on the pattern and that led me to assuming they were bunches of grapes. I have seen similar blocks in other quilts that have grapes in that sort of design.

Although it is called the Beyond the Cherry Tree there have been pineapples and flowers in the designs so it is not selectively about cherries.

I am happy to include a bit more colour. It has never been my intention to make a purely red and green quilt. So I will probably make grapes , although I do like the look of Wendy's block of cherries.

  2. I will probably stick a few other colours into those circles. I live in a wine producing area of the our country, and the grapes come in all sorts of colours - well that is my excuse! WW

  3. I've always seen them as grapes...the bunch arrangement, the vine, the tendrils and vaguely grape leaf shape...also remember "Beyond the Cherry Trees" is Gay's name for the quilt not the original maker's.

  4. Even though I'm still on block #7, (is everyone tired of hearing that breaking news!) this weekend I bought some dark purples for the grapes. I figure I'll toss some purple into flowers along the way. With 25 blocks we have lots of room to ad lib. I'm sure I'll have some reds and pinks in the grapes too. And I know I won't have as many circles as the pattern calls for.

  5. I have three cherry trees and also live in a wine producing area (Oregon). (That's my disclaimer. Wendy - where do you live?) Cherries don't grow in bunches like these or have the curly tendrils - and since grapes do, I vote for grapes!

  6. I like the "grapes" being purple. Maybe shades of purple. Or some other colors, as grapes come in different colors.

  7. I too am going to be using "grape" coloured fabrics and will intersperse some of the colours amongst other blocks in the quilt. What is intriguing however is the vine in the centre was not green or even a shade of green. If you look carefully it was a light (sky) blue, now why did she do that? And, also the background fabric in the centre has deteriorated - did she write a verse in the centre and the ink has "rotted" the fabric - we will never know, but something to ponder on.
