Well, I'm relieved it's over.
This block looked so easy. In fact, I thought it was rather plain. After checking my books on older quilts, I found it is a common block and instantly recognizeable. So I couldn't add any fancy doo-dads.
Just to make it more interesting I decided to piece the leaves, Susan McCord style. I've always admired the quilt hanging in the Henry Ford Museum. I can't remember it's name but you probably know the one I'm referring to. That bit wasn't hard after I discovered it appliqued easier if the seams were pressed open.
Fitting the design in a 17" background proved awkward. Anyone who is doing this quilt may like to comment on how big they are cutting the background. The pattern says 17" but for block #3 I have cut my background 17.5" Now I am moving right along on #3 and hope it, too, doesn't slow me down.
I love the pieced fabrics, Really adds to the pattern. Funny, you made your block exactly the way I did, with 3 leaves on opposite sides. That's not how the pattern is, but more than us made it this way. I think that's so interesting!
ReplyDeleteYou're right. I had to go and check because I didn't know what you were talking about. How strange I didn't notice the difference when I first looked at the block. Maybe "she " made the mistake and we just corrected it...
ReplyDeleteI'm cutting my blocks bigger. Well, tearing them actually, but I'm making them a tad over 18". I found 17" to be too small, too, and I'll probably have to stretch block 2 somehow. 17 1/2" wasn't even big enough! I'm not sure that what's left on the side will be wide enough for the border, though. At least I got a Moda fabric so I should be able to get more.
ReplyDeleteYour pieced leaves look good.
PS - I went back and looked at the original quilt and at the block 2 pattern. I hadn't realized they're different! I made mine like the pattern, too.
ReplyDeleteI love the pieced leaves. It really gives a great deal of interest....and...I love the shade of green that you are using. It is so fresh. I can almost see a whole quilt of just this one block. It's very Baltimore-ish.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you gals have got something interesting going here... beyond a lot of hard work.

ReplyDeleteVery cool leaves - I haven't tried to make the pieced leaves in any projects yet, but I love them and what a great way to use up some interesting scraps!
